About Womens Health

Womens Health Physiotherapy is about the assessment and treatment of the pelvic floor muscles and associated disorders. The pelvic floor is a group of muscles and connective tissue that helps provide support for internal organs and maintains continence.
Weakness or dysfunction of the pelvic floor muscles can lead to problems such as;
-Pelvic pain
Such problems can lead to further issues, such as anxiety, depression and decreased participation in social and/or sporting activities.

Risk Factors for Pelvic Floor Weakness

-Pregnancy and childbirth
-Repetitive heavy lifting
-Straining when going to the toilet
-Repetitive coughing (eg. Respiratory conditions)

Physiotherapy can provide strengthening exercises for the pelvic floor muscles, in addition to lifestyle and activity modifications to provide the best rehabilitation for your condition. These exercises can help improve continence, prolapse, sexual function and pain levels.
Participation in a Clinical Pilates program can also be beneficial in increasing your adherence to a pelvic floor rehabilitation program.
If physiotherapy is not suitable for your condition, you may be referred to your GP for a specialist opinion.
