About Plantar Fascitis

The plantar fascia is a long ligament underneath the foot which starts at the heel and extends towards the toes. Plantar fasciitis is an irritation of the plantar fascia which may present as pain at the heel or in the arch of the foot.  People with plantar fasciitis commonly experience the worst in the morning upon standing and residual pain throughout the day when standing.

Factors contributing to Plantar Fascitis

– Long periods of standing
– Recent increase in weight bearing activities
– Increase in sports training
– Increased body weight
– Tight calf muscles
– Flat feet

Physiotherapy

A physiotherapist will assess your pain, presentation and biomechanics. They can then treat your plantar fasciitis with hands on techniques which may include massage, manual therapy and taping.  Your physiotherapist can then provide advice on what you can do at home to further progress your treatment, this may include stretching, postural correction and activity modification.  In some cases orthotic prescription may be of benefit.
