About Knee Pain

The knee consists multiple structures including the femur (thigh bone), tibia and fibula (lower leg bones), kneecap (patella), cartilage (meniscus), ligaments, tendons and muscles.  Therefore there can be many causes of knee pain.

Common Acute Injuries

Acute injuries may be caused by a direct blow to the knee or from abnormal twisting or bending therefore are common among footy and netball players. These injuries can include:
– Strains, tears or ruptures of ligaments, tendons & muscles
– Meniscus strains or tears
– Fractures
– Patella dislocation

Common Overuse Injuries

Overuse injuries are extremely common and occur with repetitive or new activities such as jogging, cycling, kneeling and climbing stairs. Overuse injuries can include:
– Bursitis
– Tendinopathies (degeneration of the tendons)
– Patella Maltracking (pain in the front of the knee)
– Irritation and inflammation of the ITB (runners knee)

Treatment

Due to the wide range of possible causes and outcomes of knee pain, it is important to be assessed by a physiotherapist to form an accurate diagnosis and to provide the appropriate treatment.  Physiotherapy management often includes soft tissue techniques, taping, stretching and rehabilitation exercises.  If your injury is suspected to be serious, you may be referred for imaging such as X-Ray or MRI or to a specialist physician.
